Character.ai is shutting down

Character.ai filed voluntary Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to run a court-supervised sale. The company expects the sale process to finish by late November or early December 2026. The platform is still running; if no buyer keeps it going, Character.ai says it will be wound down.

What happens to your data

The official FAQ says information stays protected under the current Privacy Policy for now, and you can delete your account or export data through the app or website. There is no published hard deletion deadline yet because a shutdown is not confirmed.

How to save your data

These steps come from the official notice linked below. We have not run them on a live account yet.

1. On the web: open your Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data.
2. On the mobile app: open your Profile → settings icon → Export my data.
3. ExportTested is false; steps are from Character.ai's help center (updated July 10, 2025).
